On Monday, May 27, 2024, starting at 6:00 p.m., the first Croatian official promotion of the scientific monograph "Colloquium on Journalism Education" authored by associate prof. Tijane Vukić, head of the HEJDE project.
The promotion lasted almost an hour and a half, during which, beside the author, the book was be presented by an associate professor Zarfa Hrnjić Kuduzović from the Department of Journalism, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Tuzla (Bosnia and Herzegovina) as a reviewer, Toni Gabrić, editor at the Croatian electronic publication H-alter which was a HEJDE project partner and, Maja Bošnjak, book editor.
Hrnjić Kuduzović, the reviewer, firstly explained the scientific value of the monograph. She pointed out that as a result of a deep analysis the author detected key deficiencies in the education and employment system, including uneven curricula, unclear criteria for practicing journalism and arbitrary interpretation of journalist qualifications as well as status in the newsroom, along with presentation of the attitude of all important key stakeholders in the process of education and work of journalists, from which it is listed what needs to be done in order for journalism to become a regulated profession in Croatia with clearly defined criteria and standardized qualifications for practicing it. She further contextualized the key issue that the publication brings in the local and international context, and concluded that the professionalization of journalists in the full sense, which the book calls for, is necessary in all Balkans countries.
Gabrić problematized the situation in the media, especially the mainstream, in which young students or those who have just finished one of the studies that educate journalists enter. In the absence of city newsrooms and youth press, non-profit media could be the most adequate incubators for them, but due to the lack of financial resources, they often barely survive. He made a brief overview of the environment in which the Croatian media operate today, emphasizing that it is politics that has been undermining the media in various ways for year such as the lack of a national media strategy, media corruption, and the incorrect attitude of current politicians towards journalists and media organizations.
The author explained her motivation for dealing with Croatian system of journalistic journalism education, specifics of applied research method and the choice of the sample, problems that occurred during the long-term research process and its chronology, the main outcomes and scientific and professional contribution of the book.
